Staff training and education

Does staff education system exists in your institution?

  1. For most employees we provide only the training necessary for the job. Our managers take a Certified Tourism Ambassador course. Also, some of our kitchen staff and managers take a Food Safety course.
  2. Education and Training are provided both within the institution and also provide the access to undertake learnign outwith the institution (i.e. an Acute hospital trust with 4000 staff) There is a system to undertake "in house learning" whether this is classroom, blended (with elearning) or practical skill sessions (e.g. Venepuncture or Resuscitation) We also are an environemtn that provides opportunities for those who are undertaking University programmes to become Doctors, Nurses or Allied Health Professionals (e.g Physiotherapist or Pharmacist)

Are people interested in education and training in Your institution?

  1. Yes. Our employees are always eager to take courses outside of work. Also, the majority of our staff are high school and college students. They spend the summer earning money while working for us so they can afford to attend higher education.
  2. As an organsiation we are linked to training demands based in legislation e.g. Fire safety and Health and Safety, other requirements as demanded by the National Health Services "insurers" Standards. Providing training to ensure staff have the approrpiate skills, delivered in the right place and the right time e.g. Record Keeping training, Consent Training. Demands from Legislation and Standards are deemed "Mandatory" and therefore are to be undertaken first prior to all other Continued Professional Develepment (CPD). Inteterest in the Mandatory elements of our learning are variable, but in the main are considered essential to maintain. Other CPD Learning is alsways viewed with interest because invariably the indiviudals have undertaken this leanring to enhance their role and place of work or it is linked to their personal need

Do Your employees have a conscious approach to development and training?

  1. Yes
  2. Health care per se always askes its staff to develop, change, look to find new and improved ways of treating pateints. There are estaclished practices that only by undating on a regular basis can you be deemed competent. All qualified staff within the organsiation have a duty to maintain skilled and maintain their registration with their regulating body, e.g. Nurse is linked to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (http://www.nmc-uk.org/ or as a Doctor with the British Medical Association (http://www.bma.org.uk/) or as a dietition (http://www.hpc-uk.org/) Those who do not have a professional qualifications, their need to develop would be based on their attitude, their current (based on their job description) or desired role (career path either wihtin health care or outwith)

Do the employees learn and raise their qualification voluntarily?

  1. That varies between individuals. The majority do not without encouragement.
  2. This depends on the role of indiviudals within the organsiation. There are essential elements indiviudalas have to posess to ensure that they get and interview and untimately the job. There will be developments that are expected of indiviudals depending on the role they occupy. As a newly qualified Midwife there is an expectation that certain clinical competences are to be attained over a period of time (above the Mandatory requirments and CPD) these would be "Service specific", such as Examination of the Newborn, Mentorship skills, CTG interpretation skills etc. This will not change a qualification of the individual but gives them experience and ability to apply for more senior roles. There are indidividuals who have entered employement as an un qualified health care assistant and with support and development , undertaken additional learnign to enable that indiviudal to access nursing programmes of study and become qualified.

Do You encourage Your staff in education and training?

  1. Yes
  2. As I work in Education and Training my whole philosophy is about providing opportuinities and development of all grades of staff whether they are qualified or un qualified or administrative by back ground. Yes

What are the ways to raise employees’ qualification?

  1. Working with experienced employees. Tests on the menu and the protocol. Supervision by managers. Employee handbook. Verbal praise, rewards, and bonuses for outstanding preformance.

Undertaking in house study / skills clinical and also non clinical such as IT skills Undertake skills based courses ro achieve competance in a particular skill e.g Resusciation: undergoing Intermediate Life Support programme to achieve this competence Access external programmes of study in Further education institutions (colleges) to attain National Vocational qualifications Access external modules or whole programmes of study in higher education institutions (universities) to attain certificates, diplomas, degrees or masters level of study or PhD

Is the training conducted for the new employees?

  1. All new employees provide on the job training. They spend time shadowing experience employees. After that they will be shadowed by the experienced employees while they preform the skills for the first time.
  2. All new staff members undertake a Corporte Induction Programme and where required a mentorship programme Guidance provided to undertake Mandatory learning within the first month, three months or year depended on job role and teh learning required

Does the training focus on the special capabilities of staff development?

  1. Learning is a blend focusing on skill & knowledge development focusing on self development focusing on training to enable individuals to train others

Are the employees trained by personal skills which is necessary for their hours of work?

  1. Yes
  2. Dependent on roles indiviudals who manange/supervise others undertake leanring associated wiht personal development, such as mentorship, coaching, appraisal skills, dealing with challenging behaviour, customer care , organsiational and change management

Are there training needs establishment?

  1. In general, because we are a restaurant and ice cream parlor, our training needs are much simpler than a corporate office. There are only a few different positions (ie., server, cook, fountain worker, dish washer, etc.) and each employee is only trained in one or two of the areas. There is a basic set of knowledge and skills they must master. Besides working with different customers every day this is not a job that has different functions or projects. Each job is limited to what it is...not really any room for growth besides outstanding performance.

  1. Previously described.

Do employees need to pay for the training?

  1. No
  2. Learning that is not related to either their role or service then yes this is the indiviudals personal development All Mandatory training is provided they do not pay Study leave with or without costs is accessible from all staff groups: applications are made and in teh majority of cases this is funded

Are the funds allocated for the staff training?

  1. Yes
  2. Funds are identified both internal with a training budget as well as monies from our Health Authority Ad hoc Government initiatives also provide monies for various schemes

What teaching methods and forms are used?

  1. Printed materials, verbal descriptions, and one-on-one instruction.

How is employee assessment going?

  1. One written exam. Daily supervision and ongoing assessment from management.
