Lithuanian Showcase | SIRENOS
Let us build a better showcase - simply answer a few easy and short questions and help us by letting to know what you think.
Was it your first time at the "SIRENOS" festival?
When have you been in SIRENOS festival?
What's the main reason why you're coming to the festival SIRENOS?
If you'd be willing to choose more than one answer to the previous question or you've chosen "other" as an answer - could you write it more specifically?
- I was interested in 1. the Lithuanian showcase 2. the International showcase 3. meeting colleagues on international level for an exchange
- I was also very intersted in the International programme
- I was interestd
- I was interested by the new generation of lithuanians artists
- The reasons were the International young theatre critics' conference and some performances from both Lithuanian and International programme.
- I was invited to this conference
- I admire Lithuanian theatre, have worked in the past with a Lithuanian director and will probably do so in the near future, so it is important for me to attend the Lithuanian showcase.
- the Festival programme, the Showcase as well as the International programme
Which performances of the Lithuanian Showcase did you see this year?
Could you name which one was most interesting and why?
- Seagull and Richard II
- book of job because of Nekrosius seagull because of OKT contemporary just nice
- The Seagull because of the different point of view of Chehovs play.
- The most interesting one has been to me "The Seagull", because of its way to reinvent the classical play with a contemporary approach. The result is that we have a completely up-to-date aesthetics, the depht of the original text and consequently the possibility to a real partecipation. The best proof for it has been that at the beginning I had some problems with the subtitles because of the grey background, but after the first few minutes I forgot even my personal difficulty to follow word by word and sunk in the performance!
- The Seagull and The Book of Job - becouse of great acting and directing. Contemporary becouse I like dance theatre. The Dreamspell becouse it's interesting to see some fresh works.
- "Most interesting" is a very difficult term. I had interest towards the Lithuanian symbolistic theatre as a whole. That's the main reason of my visit. I was very inspired by the showcase as a whole, because it gave me a great overview of the tendencies and currents, modern and classical themes in Lithuanian theatre today. Anyhow, if I had to choose just one, I think it would be THE SEAGULL. For the honest and straight-forward approach, for the deep concentration the ensemble had put into their work and for the energy they put into the performance that day. A strong feeling of a whole, feeling of one-ness in a group of actors is the most valuable quality of ensemble-acting. And it was there! I also loved Nekrošius's "The Book of Job". It is not an easy watching but the modern world sometimes needs another kind of glance from the audience. The performance had an atmosphere from another world, the kind of aura you don't meet everyday, even in theatre not. I would love to see more from MENO FORTAS and hope they will come to Tallinn, someday. Also, interesting was to see the students playing on the motifs of Dreamspell. Theatre Academy seems to be the place where Lithuanian theatre is born again and again, where it takes along it's good traditions and ever-present experiments with forms and symbols. So, I think it should be a constant member of the festival programme lists.
- 1 The Dreamspell (dir. Kamilė Gudmonaitė) because it is really solid and inventive work. I will try to invit this show in ma festival Sens Interdits in october 2015 2 The Seagull (dir. Oskaras Koršunovas) very strong show. I recommanded it to my ex-theater Célestins, théâtre de Lyon 3 Broken Heart Story (dir. Saara Turunen) for the thematic
- Most intresting was definitely Šarka's totally crazy performance as I've never seen something quite like that before.
- 'The seagull' - I saw it third time and I consider this performance as one of the most important theatre experience in my life - it's absolutely fantastic! I also like 'Contemporary?' very much because of its sense of humour, very good diagnosis of the problem and great dancer.
- I really, really enjoyed the Feast Fashion - I had never seen anything like it and I suppose that's the reason why I was so impressed by it. It was also just very well done and which for me was a bit surprising as the performance was from the Experimental Stage.
Could you name which one was a total waste of time and why?
- A total waste of time was the final discussion on the festival. The guest was hardly prepared, the level of the discussion was low. Very low. I was sorry with the gorgeous interpreter. She was very good but could not help it.
- no
- Sirens can't help wailing - Although later I realized what it says, I think the way that was done was unprofessional.
- I was not glad at all about "Feast Fashion". Great space, good setting, exciting light design, for a very small content in both: form and meaning. Also the way to play was not solved.
- Broken Heart Story - it was too comercial.
- I must be honest - the first day was poor for me. Maybe it was the 8-hour car-ride from Tallinn that made me more picky and demanding. I arrived in Vilnius just one hour before the beginning of CALIGULA. I read the play beforehand and love the intellectual absurdity of it. Seeing the performance by director Vidas Bareikis was a little disappointment. No, the actors were doing their best, it was all there and visible - playing with the puppets (great!), provoking the audience, walking on the line of good taste etc. But the concept didn't work for me. Although I like the courage to use new forms and the space was interestingly solved. But I couldn't help thinking if the actors spoke English for the international audience or do they do it in all performances? This English language was the main reason why energy of the show was low and became a long-long retelling of the play, not a separate live-performance. With all my respect towards the artists, I left after the break. As it was a "work-in-progress", I hope the final result will be something more powerful and brave - it had all the potential, in the beginning especially. But then again, there is this question of taste, that we can never fully describe. Maybe it wasn't just my cup of tea...
- As I saw quite few performances I didn't experience anything disappointing.
- 'Sirens can't help wailing' - it was interesting only for the first 15 minutes. After that time it started to be repeatable and for me definately too hermetic.
- I couldn't say that any of the performances I saw were complete waste of time because everything I saw was a new experience - as I had never seen any Lithuanian performances before. But of course there were some which were not so enjoyable, for example Kaligula which I guess was kind of a struggle for many spectators.
- None.
Would you be interested in more extra activities than just watching of the performances?
Could you name an activity that would interest you in a Showcase like this?
- Connected to the showcase: One or two meetings to discuss among the invited guests - as we were not many, it might be easily possible to arrange. I am not sure about the interest of my colleagues - but maybe it could be fruitful. Apart from that: Somehow I regret I did not have a guided tour on the history of Vilnius... but on the other hand: time was short anyway and actually WELL filled with performances to see. Thank you!
- no
- Tallking wiht some of the directors.
- I would have liked to have an opportunity to discuss about specific issues of contemporary theatre with the invited collegues and/or the Lithuanian artists and specialists in a sort of convention, which could have taken place during the Festival. I tryed the morning programme, but it had evidently mostly an educational value.
- Maybe some meetings with an artists?
- Artist talks. Audience meeting with directors. Master-classes.
- movies, reading of the new lithuanian dramaturgy
- Discussions with artists.
- An introduction to the performances befor they start (in English) and possible meetings with artists after performances.
- An informal get together with other international guests (and maybe directors) to be able to establish contacts.
Would you be interested in festival SIRENOS if it had only the International programme?
Would you be interested in festival SIRENOS if it had only the Lithuanian Showcase?
Is there anything you'd like to suggest to the organizers of the festival and - specifically - to the organizers of the Lithuanian Showcase?
- It could be ever so help - and joyful to meet the invited colleagues IN THE BEGINNING of the festival - a come together to meet and introduce eachother, and it would be good, to have a common place to meet and exchange in between or in the evening- a café for example.
- everything very good, just translation sometimes was failed
- Go ahead.
- It could be nice to have the chance to meet the artists and exchange opinions about the plays in a separate roundtable.
- No.
- Keep the range of different theatre approaches as wide as possible, to give as colourful picture as possible of the present state.
- -
- Maybe to pay more attention to the translation as for one performance it wasn't clear enough (although I understand that it was the performer himself that didn't really respect the girl who translated) and in the Feast Fashion it would have been nice to have a translation in the end, as the rest of the performance was in english :)
- Keep the mixture of Lithuanian and international performances.
- Conserning the previous two questions - It really depends on the selection. More explanation, framing and "microdiplomacy" that helps to understand the context of the production as well as context of lithuanian culture & society would be appreciated. It depends if you want to "show" or also "sell" productions. The strategies may be slightly different and starts from the selection of guest, goes on with the explanations of the context etc.
If the Lithuanian Showcase would be held every two years or so would you still be coming for the International programme?
How could you rate (10 being the highest)
Other thoughts or comments?
- The street maps were not clear, there were some mistakes and more over they were simply difficult to read. On the whole I felt very good with the organization, the friendliness of the whole staff, the hotel was very good.. The showcase was very interesting - especially the MIXTURE of Lithuanian and International performances was ever so attractive and inspiring for me. Thank you!
- =P
- No.
- Really great reception! Thank you very much for the free admissions and the "goodie bags". There was a small mistake on the map but this only made the wandering around the city more interesting. Getting lost is sometimes the best way to get to know the new place. Inside the goodie bags: maps were useful as were the list with international guests and the programme-book. A very nice surprise was the Lithuanian Culture Guide. Maybe the DVD with introducing videos of Vilnius was a bit cheesy and "out-of-date". The whole reception of international guests was well organised. We felt like prestigious people. I was happy to see Lithuanian theatre and compare it to my Estonian traditions and modern currents. We are not that far from each other, physically and mentally - so we should try to build stronger connections. Festivals shouldn't be the only reason to meet. I think many shows could be appealing to Tallinn audiences as well. I'm happy that this year festivals' focus was on newcomers and young directors, odd and untraditional spaces, experimenting forms. Just as good was the presence of old-school masters such as Nekrošius and Koršunovas.
- I think that everything was really well organised and I loved the time I spent in the festival, so - thank you very much to everyone involved!
- Thank you for nice days, performances, subtitles in English and so on!
- The festival web-page could use a link to the entire day to day schedule of the festival, that would make planning a trip easier. (You wouldn't have to see the times of the performances one by one by visiting the performances link.
- I would criticise a bit the accomodation conditions of the conference participants, as it seemed a the beginning that we are sleeping in a hotel with breakfast, but actually it was a bit lousy hostel. Especially the temperature - wearing outdoor clothes indoors, sleeping in sweater and pants, also the possibilities of bathroom and the breakfast which meant toast and marmalade and a broken coffee machine. The staff was very friendly though and the location superbe. The conditions were a negative surprise for me...
- I really don`t want to mark performances. Sorry. Maybe I miss that the Club exist also other nights than on Saturday.
Could you name National Theatre Showcase that in your opinion could be used as an example to others?
- Germany
- no
- The Seagull.
- I haven't seen many. During this last year I have been to festivals in Tampere TEATTERIKESÄ, St. Petersburg's BALTIISKII DOM, Viljandi's NOTAFE, but the SIRENOS experience was one of the best.
