Birthday celebration traditions in East Asian countries (China, South Korea and Japan) and Lithuania

What presents do you usually give to others/receive? Tell me more about them. Are they based on some kind of tradition or not in your opinion?

  1. accessories like rings, bracelett or sometimes just cake. on my last birthday, i got a ring, some cakes, money, dolls, clothes, cosmetics and sweets. I think i can say that its based on some kind of tradition, cause most people give jewells or cosmetics or cakes to people. there can be more variation in birthday gifts but mostly people just give accessories and cakes each other.
  2. Depends on the person but usually they are not based on tradition. Can be clothes, accessory, food, alcohol, and so on.
  3. I dont give or receive with my close friends. For my parents or relatives birthday, I give them cash.
  4. I hate the obligatory character of presents. usually I ask my friends to bring food or handmade funny things instead of presents. As for me, I either try my presents to be fun and charming or bring no presents at all.
  5. In South Korea we usually buy birthday cake as a present. On your bday you can get as many as 4 or 5 cakes in one day. Also a bottle of a good alcoholic drink is a good present (whiskey or wine).
  6. It's not based on tradition. Usually I give some food or something that the person really wants. If I don't know what to give, I give something funny.
  7. I usually give skin care products to ladies and something unique and the things that the person is interested to guys. Most of ladies become happy when they have unique skin care products coz Japanese ladies is always interested cosmetic. (I would say they are addicted,,,) And the guys won't need those cosmetic so I always choose something they are interested. Someone who loves riding bike I gave tools for bike. And those are not traditional at all. It's all up to my sense.
  8. I always give a birth card and present that they seem to like. But there is no bases.
  9. yes
  10. i try to choose present that would be useful and when that person likes or he/she just ask for money...
