Birthday celebration traditions in East Asian countries (China, South Korea and Japan) and Lithuania

If you have any relatives near you, maybe you can ask them a few questions about birthday celebrations? Maybe they can share some wisdom and tell me a little about their childhood memories regarding birthday celebrations? I would kindly appreciate that.

  10. My grandparents didn't had fancy birthday cakes as we do now. They used to get birthday tteok (rice cake) and of course seaweed soup (miyeok guk).
  11. They mostly having birthday party in their house and even a cake was too luxury so they celebrate with home made food.

I asked my father (who's over 70 years old) what birthday celebration traditions they had when he was young and he said that they didn't really even celebrate birthdays, it was a completely regular day. Instead they would all celebrate name-days. However I'm not sure whether it was the case in all of Lithuania of just his village/area.

  20. My mom mostly remembers me selecting a cake and inviting over my close kindergarden friends. And then just games games and games.

  24. My brother prefers to celebrate his birthdays in a cinema watching the newest movie, or in a restaurant with friends. He used to have birthday parties at home when he was a child.
  25. My grandmonther told me that she never celebrated any birthday as a child. She sad that they celebrated only name-day. My grandfather told me that he remembers his 7th birthday and his father gave him a bottle of alcohol. My mother rimembers her 10th birthday. It was the first birthday she ever celebrated. She invited all of her friends even her mothe didn't let her. All of them brougth food and that's how they feast.

  31. As much as I know my parents didn't celebrated their birthdays until they met, I am not sure why
  32. When my grandmother was little, in her family was a lot of kids and they were living in a village. The most special birthday gift for them was candies, because during those time, you could barely get candies. So that was a very very special day for them.
